Electric car demand charging China's lithium battery sector

Stimulated by surging demand from the fast-developing new energy car industry, China's lithium battery sector is undergoing a major consolidation, both vertically and horizontally, according to Chinese-language China Securities Journal.

"An epochal change is underway in the lithium battery industry, for which enterprises in the line should make preparations," Yuan Wei, president of Shanghai Pylon Technologies, told the paper.

One major factor behind the change is the rapid development of electric cars, as a result of which shipment of car-use lithium batteries in China rose 4% year-on-year in the five months of 2014, much better than shipment performance of lithium batteries for other usages, including declines of 2% and 4%, respectively for mobile phones and notebook PCs and the slight 1% growth for both tablet PCs and energy storage.

Lithium battery manufacturers in the nation are consequently scrambling to tap the electric car sector, which demands specifications different from that of consumer electronics. In general, electric car lithium batteries stress consistent and reliable quality, different from consumer electronics lithium batteries seeking rapid changes in functions.

Zhang Xiaofei, president of the Shenzhen Gaogong Industrial Research Institute, told the paper that with electric cars expected to grow at a clip much faster than consumer electronics, lithium batteries for electric car usage will enjoy booming business in the next five years.

Cheng Jie, president of Xin Neng New Materials, is more reserved over the potential of electric cars, however. He said that a number of hurdles exist, including the safety and cruise range of electric cars, as well as insufficient government subsidies, which is critical for the burgeoning industry.

Nonetheless, electric car lithium batteries appear to gather momentum for further development. "Electric cars and wearable devices are emerging as two major sources for new demands for lithium batteries," the owner of a Shenzhen-based new materials company told the paper.

Attracted by the huge market potential, a number of traditional enterprises have also jumped into the realm of electric car lithium batteries, in many cases via acquisitions.

Wanxiang Group, China's leading auto parts firm, took over A123, a US lithium battery supplier, at US$256 million in 2013, with the latter also acquiring more than 20 battery technologies from Leyden Energy. The acquisition of A123 is part of the group's plan to invest 1.4 billion yuan (US$224.6 million) in a large-scale production base for electric cars and lithium batteries, announced several years ago.

Moreover, a frenzy of acquisitions has occurred in the lithium battery industry, covering upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors, the paper said. Last year, there were 336 lithium battery firms in China, 21 more than 2012, boasting a 29% global market share. Most firms in the line, however, are engaged in processing operation, due to the lack of cutting-edge technologies.
