NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters) - U.S. crude oil futures stayed up a dollar at midday Monday as a strengthening Tropical Storm Wilma was forecast to become a hurricane by tomorrow and could hit an already battered U.S. energy industry in the Gulf of Mexico later this week.
At 11:45 a.m. EDT (1545 GMT), November crude <CLX5> was up $1.07 at $63.70 per a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. It rose as high as $64.28 in ACCESS trading.
In London, December Brent crude <LCOZ5> traded 68 cents higher at $60.16 a barrel on the the International Petroleum Exchange.
NYMEX November gasoline <HUX5> was up 2.39 cents at $1.7725 per gallon. In the overnight trade, it rose as high as $1.825. November heating oil <HOX5> was up 2.70 cents at $1.977 a gallon after hitting a high of $2.0095 overnight.
"Wilma obviously is having an effect on the market on the chance that it may disturb production again in the Gulf of Mexico," said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Alaron Trading in Chicago.
At the same time, Flynn said traders remained concerned about problems in restarting storm-damaged refineries in the Gulf Coast.
Earlier Monday, Lyondell-Citgo said a fire broke out in a gasoline-making unit at its 270,000 barrel-per-day Houston refinery over the weekend, causing minor burns to one contract worker.
The refinery's fluid catalytic cracker caught fire Sunday as it was being restarted following repairs in the wake of Hurricane Rita in late September, said a spokesman.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center forecast Wilma would graze the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula and enter the Gulf of Mexico where it could threaten U.S. oil and natural gas rigs and refineries along the Gulf Coast.
In its 11 a.m. EDT (1500 GMT) update, the NHC said Wilma was located about 220 miles (355 kms) south-southeast of Grand Cayman. It was moving toward the southwest at nearly 5 miles per hour (7 km/hr) and a gradual turn to the west was expected over the next 24 hours.
Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph with higher gusts. With additional strengthening during the next 24 hours, Wilma could become a hurricane by tomorrow, the NHC said.
Wilma is the 21st named tropical storm of the active and devastating 2005 Atlantic season, tying the 1933 record for named storms.
Amid the devastation brought by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, recovery of U.S. production in the Gulf has been slow. As of Friday, 67 percent of oil output was still shut out of the normal 1.5 million bpd level, the U.S. Minerals Management Service said.
