TOKYO (Dow Jones)-- Tokyo stocks retreated Tuesday after investors cashed in profits after five straight days of gains.
The Nikkei also suffered from reports that the government plans to increase outlays to the embattled Japanese financial sector.
According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Japan's Financial Services Agency will request Y1 trillion as part of a government-backed program that will in part increase deposit insurance at troubled banks.
Some analysts said that would only delay the restructuring of their bad loans.
Among the losers Tuesday were bank Mizuho Holdings and electronics firms such as NEC, Sony and Toshiba.
In the currency market, the dollar gave up earlier gains that it had posted against the yen on renewed interest in U.S. stocks.
The euro traded at 116.18 yen, down from 116.20 yen late Monday in Tokyo.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond fell to 1.2200% from 1.2400% Monday.
