TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Tokyo stocks shot higher Monday morning, extending last week's four-day rally despite losses on Wall Street. Gains came on short-covering led by public pension funds.
Traders said the market could expect some support from weekend calls for a Y6 trillion tax cut by Finance Minister Masajuro Shiokawa.
Shares were up in many major sectors from banking to autos and electronics. Gainers included high-technology firms Kyocera, Mitsubishi Electric, NEC and Sony; automakers Mazda and Nissan; and banking giant Mizuho Holdings.
In the currency market, the dollar fell back from Friday's strength on renewed weakness in U.S. stocks.
The euro traded at 116.26 yen, down from 116.34 yen late Friday in Tokyo.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond fell to 1.2400% from 1.2600% on Friday. Its price rose 0.18 point to 100.53.
