TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Tokyo stocks drifted in a wait and see mood ahead of the Federal Reserve Board meeting.
The Tokyo market began Tuesday trading tentatively as investors remain sidelined until more clear-cut signals emerge from the U.S. market. Movement has been slow on the market as many Japanese are away for the week during the annual obon holiday.
Tuesday morning decliners were telecom issues Japan Telecom, KDDI and NTT. Blue-chip technology stocks also dipped, such as Sony and Canon.
In currency dealings, the dollar fell against the yen, picking up from overnight weakness in New York, where the dollar reached its lowest level against the yen for more than a week. Hopes ebbed for a quick fix for the U.S. market with an interest rate cut prompted traders to sell the dollar. But traders are also watching to see if the Federal Reserve adopts an easing bias.
The euro traded at 116.22 yen, down from 116.52 yen late Monday in Tokyo.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond was up at 1.2700% from Monday's close of 1.2550%. Its price dropped 0.13 to 100.26.
