TOKYO (Dow Jones)--Asian share prices fell Friday, led by selling in chip and computer-related stocks, after Taiwan Semiconductor cut its capital spending and profit outlook.
Taiwan Semiconductor announced second-quarter profits short of expectations and said that capital expenditure in 2002 will be less than $2 billion compared with the expected level of $2.5 billion.
Indexes were down across the region with Tokyo's benchmark Nikkei down by more than 300 points and back below 10,000 points.
Advantest and Tokyo Electron, which supply equipment to Taiwan Semiconductor, led the way down. Samsung Electronics and Hynix Semicondutor also fell sharply.
On the forex markets, the dollar posted gains against both the yen and euro overnight on talk that U.S. investors are switching their cash back into U.S. equities.
