Sun CFO Steve McGowan said the company would see a "slight loss" for its 2003 first quarter, with revenue falling 10 percent to 15 percent from the $3.4 billion Sun took in during its 2002 fourth quarter, ended June 30.

"It's disappointing," said Richard Chu of SG Cowen Securities in Boston. "To reach profitability doesn't mean much if they're going to go back into the red."

However, Sun CEO Scott McNealy maintained that the company would see full-year revenue growth of between 10 percent and 15 percent over 2002 and earnings of between 10 cents and 15 cents a share.

Analysts said the near-term forecast, for what McNealy called the company's traditionally slowest business period, dampened any excitement generated by Sun's return to profitability after three straight quarters of losses.

For Sun's fourth quarter, the company earned 1 cent a share, meeting the consensus of analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial/First Call. Net income was $28 million, not including an $18 million loss on equity investments, a $4 million credit for adjustments to restructuring charges and a $6 million benefit for the related tax effects. Sun said that with those amounts factored in, net income remained at 1 cent a share, or $20 million.
