Billionaires of the world unite! In an odd turn of events in the ongoing Global Crossing scandal, Texas billionaire Richard Rainwater now owns about 3M shares or over 13% of Global Crossing common stock, almost a million shares of which he snapped up over the last few days.

News of the buying sent the stock up $1.30 to $10.70 on 5 May 12th. The stock is now well off the recent post scandal lows of $5.70 hit on May 3rd - a near 130% move up in a few weeks (although still down from pre scandal levels). Rainwater started buying in March, but accelerated his buying after the stock took a 50%+ dive during the recent bad accounting news.

Rainwater joins Mexican telecom billionaire Carlos Slim who holds just under 4M shares or around 18% of the company's common, a stake largely acquired before the stock fell. With Singapore Technologies Telemedia controlling some 60% of Global Crossing, there is very little stock left for non-billionaires, a possible short squeeze scenario. A short squeeze can occur if those who have sold a stock short are forced to buy it back as investor buying dries up supply and requires those who have borrowed it to sell to return it. The upward movement can create short covering, or panic buying to close out short positions that are quickly losing money.

We're sticking with our position in the troubled company even though we've taken a big hit along with Slim. Two billionaires certainly can be wrong, but we feel the odds of a big move up exceed a collapse to nothing.
