San Diego (CBS.MW) -- From the fair and equal treatment department:
Sirius Satellite Radio ( SIRI ) CEO Joe Clayton didn't quite agree with this column's interpretation of Sirius's market share data from research firm NPD.
He said so in a letter:
Dear Herb,
Let me set the record straight in regards to the recent debate about NPD data.
First, NPD has been providing sales data to the Consumer Electronics industry since 1987. So, this is not some new phenomenon. And yes, it does exclude Wal-Mart; however, it does encompass most major national power and regional retailers from across the country. [An attachment was included to show this.]
Second, Sirius has been test-marketing and selling Audiovox product in selected Wal-Mart stores since December of last year. These 100 locations are called Connection Centers, and they represent the best selling consumer electronics stores in the Wal-Mart chain.
Third, due to the success of this market test, Wal-Mart will be receiving Jensen-branded radios and boomboxes in 2300 locations this month. Obviously, these models will be bundled with the Sirius Satellite Radio service.
These are the facts!
In regards to the NPD data itself, the point that is significant is our rapidly increasing market share gain in the retail category:
Year/Month Sirius Market Share
2002 11%
2003 33%
January 2004 39%
February 2004 41%
March 2004 44%
Argue the numbers if you will, but the trend is irrefutable.
If you want to quickly end the debate, then just have XM report its retail subscribers just as Sirius does, and we will all know the true market share percentage for each company.

That doesn't get to the issue of actual subscribers, as opposed to those who buy radios. But the retail market share numbers are the numbers and as my original column said -- they're correct.
