Pacific Fuel Cell Corp. Announces Development of Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell with Carbon Nanotube-Based Electrodes

November 11, 2003 12:00:00 (ET)

TUSTIN, Calif., Nov 11, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Pacific Fuel Cell Corp. (PFCE, Trade) is pleased to announce that a research team headed by Professor Yushan Yan of the University of California at Riverside, under a contract with PFCE, has successfully developed a fuel cell using carbon nanotube-based electrodes.

Pacific Fuel Cell Corp. expects that the use of multi-walled carbon nanotubes as a platinum support for proton exchange membrane fuel cells will reduce the manufacturing cost of fuel cells through an increased utilization of platinum.

Professor Yan, a principal researcher for Pacific Fuel Cell Corp., received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology and is a leading authority on high temperature proton conductive membranes and nanostructured electrodes.

PFCE has signed a contract with the UC Riverside to do research and build a fuel cell prototype based upon PFCE's proprietary carbon nano-technology. UC Riverside's Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, headed by Robert Haddon, distinguished professor of Chemistry and Chemical & Environmental Engineering, features a research team of 25 faculty members from engineering, cell biology and neuroscience, chemistry and physics. In addition, the University's Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) serves as a model for partnerships among industry, government and academia for environmental education, collaboration with industry and government to improve the technical basis for regulations and policy and as a creative source of new technology.

Matching funds are being provided by the State of California.

Pacific Fuel Cell Corp. owns the worldwide rights (excluding Japan) to proprietary PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel cell technology. Using its extensive international relationships, the Company plans to create joint ventures to rapidly commercialize its innovative technology.
