AMD Loss Narrows, Beats Expectations

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - News) on Thursday posted a sharply narrower third-quarter loss on sales that shot higher by 88 percent on increased demand for microprocessors and flash-memory used in cell phones.
Revenue was above Wall Street expectations and the company forecast that current quarter sales would rise further based both on seasonal demand and customer interest in its 64-bit processors that allow servers and PCs to crunch more data at a time than existing 32-bit processors.
But AMD Chief Executive Hector Ruiz cautioned that AMD's results were due to market share gains and not indicative of a broad-based recovery, particularly with regard to corporate spending.
"Acceptance of AMD products in the corporate space has been growing and increasing," he said on a conference call with analysts. But that "may not be reflective of a rebound."
Shares of AMD jumped to $15.22 in after-hours trade from a closing price of $13.96 on the New York Stock Exchange (News - Websites) .
AMD's stronger-than-expected results and solid forecast followed results from Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - News) earlier this week that were seen as further confirmation that the end is near for the semiconductor industry's worst-ever downturn.
AMD posted a third-quarter net loss of $31 million, or 9 cents per share, compared with a net loss of $254.2 million, or 74 cents per share a year earlier.
Sales were $954 million, compared with $508.2 million a year ago, and grew on a global basis, the Sunnyvale, California-based company said.
COSTS CUT, REVENUE GREW
Analysts, on average, had expected the company to post sales of $866.9 million and a loss of 36 cents per share, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters Group Plc.
AMD did not break out comparable operating results per share but reported an overall operating loss of $30 million, narrower than its net loss.
The company cut costs as a result of the flash joint venture and grew revenue from increased sales of flash and even more so, microprocessors, said Dan Scovel, an analyst at Needham & Co.
With the AMD 64-bit processors "they're selling higher priced products but it's not really costing them more to do it," he said. "They're benefiting from the new 64-bit offerings and a good business environment."
AMD ended the third quarter with cash of just over $1 billion.
Flash memory sales also more than doubled from the second quarter, reflecting both new demand and a consolidation of results of operations from a joint venture with Fujitsu Ltd. (Tokyo:6702.T - News) dubbed FASL LLC, AMD said.
It declined to say how much the joint venture contributed to the improvement in flash-memory results.
For the fourth quarter, operating costs are expected to remain about $1 billion, the company said.
Analysts, on average, had been expecting AMD to post fourth-quarter revenues of $957.3 million.
"Economic and industry conditions remain uncertain and continue to make it particularly difficult to forecast product demand," the company said in a statement.
