Close Dow +5.54 at 9345.62, Nasdaq +27.10 at 1731.54, S&P +0.42 at 1085.20: [BRIEFING.COM] A positive session for the market averages but a relatively limited range trading environment persisted throughout. The tech dominated Nasdaq Composite outperformed with steady leadership provided by the semiconductor, networking, software and storage sectors. The Dow gains were muted by AT&T (T -7.6%), DuPont (DD -1.9%) and Eastman Kodak (EK -10.1%). DD beat the Q3 consensus by $0.02 and both T and EK were in line. However, each of these Dow components issued a warning for Q4. A poor performance was also noted by the energy sector. Late yesterday the American Petroleum Institute reported a higher than expected increase in inventory levels, speculation rose that OPEC was not going to cut production for several weeks and Enron (ENE -17%) was blasted amid talk that the company is not being forthright according to Prudential which downgraded the stock. JP Morgan and FAC/Equities First Albany also downgraded. The American Gas Association report did, however, trigger a modest recovery in the natural gas sector this afternoon. There was no data today but the Fed did released its Beige Book. The report indicated that the economy was weak in Sep and early Oct but business did recover quickly from some of the Sep 11 effect; long-term impact of the attack was difficult to assess. In other words the Fed is still uncertain where the economy is headed. An area of interest on the upside outside of the tech sector included SureBeam (SURE +44%) and its parent Titan Corp (TTN 17.9%). These are stocks that have risen in the wake of news that the Postal Service plans to irradiate mail to combat the anthrax threat. Despite the fact that the Dow and the S&P spent a good portion of the session in positive territory and finished in the green, market internals for the NYSE were negative. Similar readings on the Nasdaq exchange were more encouraging as up volume outpaced down volume by a 5 to 2 ratio but advancers held only a 5 to 4 edge over decliners. SOX +4%... DOT +1.2%... XOI +0.5%... BTK +2.5%... Russell 2000 +0.1%... NYSE Adv/Dec 1360/1735... Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1926/1649.

General Commentary
Chip and chip equipment stocks drifted for most of the session, as reflected by the slight 4 point loss in the Philadelphia Semiconductor, or SOX, index... Sector's behavior over past several days has been a little strange to us, as we can't understand the excitement over the capex reductions projected for next year... Monday saw the group, especially the chip equipment companies like Applied Materials (AMAT), KLA-Tencor (KLAC), Novellus (NVLS) and Teradyne (TER), post sizable gains (7% or more) in response to rumor that Intel (INTC) would cut its capex spending by between 10% to 20% v. 30% feared by many... Though Intel later denied the report, investors now seem to expect more modest cuts in spending... A Reuters report Tuesday, however, noted that research firm IC Insights projecting a 25% reduction in capital spending in FY02, with Intel posting the biggest drop - 40%.

Briefing.com doesn't know whether spending will be reduced by 20%, 30% or 40%... One reason for that is that the chip companies themselves have little idea how good/bad business will be next year, as most are opting not to provide guidance beyond Q4... Global economic conditions are simply too fluid for accurate forecasting.

What we do know, however, is that economic conditions are soft and show no signs of recovering in the immediate future... We also know that (in general) sales and earnings growth continues to decelerate... With layoffs mounting, the economy faltering and consumers buckling it seems imprudent to make an investment which requires the best-case scenario in order to pay-off.

Consequently, we look for the recent advance in the chip sector to short-circuit in the days and weeks to come... Considering the Nasdaq often follows the SOX, that's bad news for the rest of the tech sector as well.

After the close, AT&T (T) and Amazon.com (AMZN) reported results that were in-line with expectations... Fairchild Semi (FCS), Allegiance Telecom (ALGX), Citrix (CTXS) and LSI Logic (LSI) among those firms beating estimates, while Oak Tech (OAKT) and Compaq (CPQ) missed their numbers... Pre-market futures are trading up and suggesting that markets
may open higher. European stocks mostly higher on Telecom
and Banking sectors strength. ECB is expected to cut rates
tomorrow. Asian stocks are mixed. U.S. Stocks fell on Tuesday
as renewed anthrax concerns surfaced and earnings reports from
Telecom and Drug companies continue to disappoint investors.
Volume came in at 1.30 billion on the NYSE and at 1.85 billion
on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Market breadth was marginally
negative, with advancers outpacing decliners by 16 to 15 on the
NYSE and by 19 to 17 on the Nasdaq. Airlines,Transportation,Oil
Service, Banks, Cyclicals, Gold sectors well and Network,Software,
Drug, BioTech,Insurance,Consumer Sectors fared poorly. Markets
continue to trade in last week's trading range. Dow has overhead
resistance around 9450-9490 (recent highs) and until Dow trades
above this range, it would not reach a new trading channel. Markets
are holding up pretty well in this recent economic and Anthrax
environment. Nasdaq is trading near 50-Day MA and trading could
be cautious around this level. Wednesday's trading could be
cautious and choppy as investors digest Anthrax and earnings
reports.
