Brent Crude Climbs as Nigerian Protesters Halt Output at Pumping Station

Aug. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil futures rose in London after Nigerian protesters seized a Royal Dutch/Shell Group pumping station, AFP reported, citing an unidentified Shell spokesman.

The plant, based in the Niger River delta, processes 90,000 barrels of crude a day, AFP cited the spokesman as saying. More than 1,000 protesters shut down the Kokori station on Friday to complain about pollution and neglect, it added.

``The situation in Nigeria continues to be unstable and slightest news of disruption, however small, encourages traders to start buying,'' said David Sadler, a trader at Sucden (UK) Ltd. in London.

Brent crude for September settlement rose 34 cents, or 1.2 percent, to $29.87 a barrel in open-outcry trading on London's International Petroleum Exchange at 12:29 p.m. Prices have jumped 27 percent in the past three months.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude oil for September delivery was up 26 cents at $32.12 a barrel.

Shell, ChevronTexaco Corp. and Total SA were forced to shut down 37 percent of Nigeria's oil production for two weeks in March because of violent clashes between communities in the delta and government forces.

Nigeria is Africa's top oil producer, pumping 2.1 million barrels a day in June, according Bloomberg estimates, or about 2.7 percent of world supply.
