TOKYO, Japan -- A Japanese court found Credit Suisse Financial Products guilty Thursday of obstructing a government inspection.
The Tokyo District Court also ordered the defunct unit's parent to pay a fine of $333,490, or ¥40 million.
It is the first non-Japanese bank convicted of criminal charges. Japan's securities watchdog, the Financial Services Agency, has been cracking down on overseas banks operating in Japan.
A spokesman for Credit Suisse First Boston said the bank was glad to put the case, which dates to a January 1999 raid, behind it.
"We're just looking forward to getting on with business," Tom Grimmer said. "We are accepting the judgment."
He said the bank will not appeal the verdict.
Lost license in Japan
London-based CSFP was the derivatives-trading subsidiary of the Credit Suisse Group. Its business has since been rolled into Credit Suisse First Boston, its investment-banking arm.
FSA inspectors raided the bank's Tokyo branch in January 1999. Prosecutors said CSFP broke securities laws by selling derivatives to help clients hide losses.
