Saudi firm in $170 million power deal

RIYADH:

Saudi Petrochem-ical Company (Sadaf) signed yesterday a deal worth $170 million for the construction of its own power generation plant, a statement said.

Sadaf, a joint venture between Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) and Pecten Arabian Company, an affiliate of Shell Oil Company, awarded the contract to Al Zamel Group of Saudi Arabia and CMS Generation of the US.

The 250-megawatt plant, to be established in Al Jubail Industrial City on the Gulf, will be on stream in the second half of 2005 and is aimed at boosting the company's petrochemical production, Sadaf said in a statement.

Sadaf operates several world-class chemical plants, manufacturing ethylene and ethylene derivatives.
