China Unicom's Profit Rises 41%

HONG KONG -- China Unicom Ltd. said its first-quarter net profit rose 41% from a year earlier as marketing and finance costs fell, leading some analysts to suggest the company's aggressive cost-cutting to enhance earnings could mean it is preparing for a sale of assets.

China Unicom, the Hong Kong-listed unit of China's second-largest mobile operator by subscribers, said its net profit rose to 1.96 billion yuan (US$253.9 million) from 1.39 billion yuan a year earlier. Revenue rose 4% to 23.86 billion yuan.

The company's selling and marketing costs fell 13% to 4.46 billion yuan from 5.11 billion yuan, while finance costs fell 72% to 61 million yuan from 217.9 million yuan.

"Cost-cutting to boost earnings isn't a sustainable growth strategy, but it is likely that China Unicom did so to prepare for an asset sale," said DBS Vickers Securities analyst Steven Liu.

China Unicom's shares have been driven higher by speculation that the government wants to split up the company's assets.
