Sterling gained more than half a percent on the weakening euro on Friday but eased slightly on the dollar as markets hoped UK troops would not be bogged down in combat for long if the U.S.-led forces defeat Iraq quickly. U.S. and British troops swept through southern Iraq from Kuwait in their race toward Baghdad that started overnight, but after initial reports of only sporadic resistance they ran into more opposition near a crossing on the Euphrates River.
Analysts said sterling was weighed down by reports of the first UK casualties in the war after a military helicopter crashed over Kuwait killing all U.S. and British soldiers on board.
Sterling traded just below a one-month high against the euro of 67.22 pence on Friday,before losing some ground to close around 0.6735.
Against the dollar, the pound was down 0.13 percent since the previous session at $1.5625.
An outcry against the war in Britain has over recent weeks weighed on sterling amid worries over the political future of Prime Minister Blair who has backed the U.S.-led attack on Iraq despite opposition from the public and from within his own party.
