Yesterday's Close:1.5942 High:1.6020 Low:1.5911
Sterling plunged on Thursday to its lowest level since April 1999 against the euro and on a trade-weighted basis, as gloomy UK retail sales data added new shadows to the overcast domestic economic picture.
The disappointing numbers raised fears consumer spending may no longer sustain economic growth as well as it did throughout last year when manufacturing was stuck in the doldrums.
The Office for National Statistics said retail sales fell one percent on the month, taking the annual rate of increase to 4.2 percent. This compared with analysts' forecasts of a drop of 0.3 percent on the month. Sterling lost more than half a percent to the euro on the day, falling to 68.01 pence in the afternoon, but was roughly steady against the dollar at $1.5935.
The pound has been falling on a trade-weighted basis since the start of the month as fears have mounted about Britain's economic health and as UK Prime Minister Tony Blair's unwavering support for the U.S. on Iraq has fanned worries over possible domestic political tensions.
