Welsh Carson Anderson & Stowe partnership has increased its stake in the company from 10.3% to 11.5% since November. Since Russell Carson is a Director of US Oncology, we assume he knows what he's doing. At this point, we won't fall out of our chairs in surprise if this company is acquired.
Even without the likelihood of a sale, US Oncology would be worth following. After a fundamental business-model restructuring last fall, the company's total revenue, net patient revenue, and even net income were up, even though the stock temporarily plunged.
To reiterate briefly: US Oncology is the largest health care network in the world dedicated solely to cancer treatment and research. It provides comprehensive outpatient care in 77 cancer care centers for over a half-million patients every year, including about 15% of all new US cases. The company's three divisions are Oncology Pharmaceutical Management, Outpatient Cancer Care Center Operations, and Cancer Research and Development Services, which conducts clinical trials for new and approved cancer therapies.
