UPDATE 1-Commerce One 4th-quarter loss widens, revs tumble

NEW YORK, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Business-to-business software company Commerce One Inc. (CMRC) on Tuesday posted a wider fourth-quarter loss, missing analysts' expectations, as revenues tumbled amid the U.S. economic downturn.

On a pro forma basis, excluding charges, Commerce One posted a loss of $66.5 million, or 23 cents a share, compared with a loss of $13.3 million, or 7 cents a share in the fourth quarter of last year.

Analysts polled by research firm Thomson Financial/First Call were expecting Commerce One to post a loss of 16 cents a share, with a range of a loss of 12 cents to 20 cents a share.

The company said revenues fell to $56 million vs. $191.4 million a year ago and down from $81 million in the previous third quarter.

Software license sales, a barometer for a software company's core growth, fell to $15.04 million, down from $16.7 million in the third quarter and $89.34 million a year ago.
Pro forma operating results exclude expenses related to the amortization of goodwill and other intangible assets, stock based compensation, acquisition related costs, impairment of intangible assets and equity investments, and restructuring costs, Commerce One said in a statement.
Commerce One, one-time darling of the B2B marketplace sector, posted a net loss of $168.3 million, or 59 cents a share, compared with a loss of $197.5 million, or 99 cents a share in the year-earlier quarter.
Commerce One's shares closed down 4.41 percent, at $2.60 on the Nasdaq. In the last year, the stock has lost 90 percent of its value, underperforming its closest rival Ariba Inc. (ARBA) by 40 percent. Ariba's stock is down 81 percent in the same time period.
