GBP/USD

N.Y. Close 1.5507 Yesterdays High 1.5564 Low 1.5503

The pound held close to the week's highs after figures on Friday showed Britain's economy grew at its fastest pace in more than two years in the third quarter, backing up supportive data earlier in the week. Sterling touched the week's peaks of $1.5564 and 62.79 pence per euro ,helped later in the session by dollar volatility following disappointing U.S. data. Preliminary estimates for third quarter UK gross domestic product showed growth at 0.7 percent on the quarter and 1.7 percent compared to the same quarter of 2001, higher than analysts had forecast. Analysts had been forecasting growth up at 0.6 percent, the same pace as in the second quarter.

Some said the GDP data eased pressure on the Bank of England for an interest rate cut, after expectations of an easing grew this week in the wake of Monetary Policy Committee minutes showing three members voted in favour of lower rates earlier this month.
