07:53 RTT - Nextel Communications Posts Q3 Profit From A Loss Last Year - Update [NXTL]

Thursday before the bell, Nextel Communications, Inc. (NXTL), a provider of wireless voice and data communications services, announced third quarter profits from a loss last year, on higher revenues.

Nextel’s net income including gains on retirement of debt for the quarter was $526 million or $0.58 per share, compared to a net loss of $207 million or $0.27 per share last year.

On average, 16 analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial had expected the company to earn $0.04 per share for the quarter.

Revenues for the quarter rose to $2.3 billion, from $1.8 billion posted in the year-ago quarter. Three analysts expected the company to post revenues of $2.3 billion.

Wednesday NXTL closed regular trading session at $10.20.

09:04 RTT - Paravant Agrees To Be Acquired By DRS Technologies - Update [PVAT]

Before the bell Thursday, Paravant Inc. (PVAT) announced that it has agreed to be acquired by DRS Technologies Inc. (DRS).

The Morristown, New Jersey-based Paravant, a manufacturer of computer and communication systems, said that DRS, through a wholly-owned subsidiary, will purchase all of its outstanding common shares at a price of $4.75 per share in a cash tender offer.

William R. Craven, President and CEO of Paravant, said in a statement, “ Joining DRS will provide the organizational strength and resources to build critical mass, increasing our ability to successfully implement our growth plans…”

PVAT closed Wednesday’s regular trading session at $3.60, while DRS closed at $32.81.
