08:26 ET PHOENIX, Ariz. & MADISON, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 10,
2002--Global Crossing Ltd. (NYSE: GX.N):

-- Global Crossing's FreeIPdb software tool will help conserve
IPv4 address space until IPv6 is globally deployed.

-- Tool available free to ISPs and other organizations that
assign IP address space.

-- Software downloadable at http://www.freeipdb.org/; support
also provided.

-- Developed for IPv4, FreeIPdb will work with IPv6.

Global Crossing Ltd. (NYSE: GX.N) announced today that it is making
available to Internet service providers (ISPs) and other organizations
a free software tool that can help them manage and assign Internet
Protocol (IP) address space to customers more efficiently. The
decision to offer the FreeIPdb tool free-of-charge -- along with
support services -- stems from Global Crossing's participation in an
effort by the global IP engineering community to prolong the life of
the current IPv4 system until the next-generation IPv6 system becomes
broadly available.
The current IPv4 address space consists of 4.6 billion IP
addresses worldwide. Nearly half of the current address space has been
assigned, and IPv4 addresses could be depleted by the year 2005 or
2006. Many ISPs do not have an efficient algorithm to assign these
numbers to their customers. This has resulted in a global effort
within the IP engineering community to promote conservation and the
most efficient distribution possible until IPv6 is widely available.
FreeIPdb is a flexible, sophisticated software tool that creates a
streamlined allocation process and provides a method for easily and
accurately auditing existing address space usage, which enhances the
ability of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) tables to manage router
information. The tool was developed in 2000 by Ben April, a Global
Crossing network engineer, and has been used by the company to
allocate more than 2 million IP addresses in parcels that range in
size from twoto four addresses up to thousands of addresses in the
most mathematically conservative way possible.
"IPv4 addressing is an increasingly scarce resource," said Zeus
Kerravala, Senior Analyst at The Yankee Group. "Global Crossing's Free
IPdb software tool offers a unique functional capability on a global
scale that enhances the efficiency of IP addressing and IP management,
putting more control back into the hands of the service provider."
ISPs and other organizations that assign IP address space to
internal or external business units can download FreeIPdb at
http://www.freeipdb.org/. Support for the tool is being provided by
April and Paul Benjes, director of Global Crossing's access planning
and implementation group, via the Web site.
"The FreeIPdb tool has been a boon to our IP network routing,"
said John Legere, chief executive officer of Global Crossing. "We're
pleased to make it available to help the entire IP community get
maximum advantage from IPv4 as IPv6 is being globally deployed."
IP addresses under IPv4 are 32-bit numbers often expressed as four
octets in "dotted decimal" notation. Three registry services are
responsible for overseeing the allocation of IP address space. The
American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) distributes IP address
space in the U.S. Reseaux IP Europees Network Coordination Centre
(RIPE NCC) currently serves Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Asia
Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) supports the Asia/Pacific
region. These nonprofit entities receive IP addresses from the
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), and in turn provide them
to ISPs. IANA is affiliated with the Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names & Numbers (ICANN), which is responsible for overall management
of IP address space and domain names.
Benjes and April, who are active in global IP engineering
organizations such as the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and
the North American Network Operators' Groups (NANOG), recognized the
impact that widespread use of FreeIPdb would have. "We distributed
e-mail within the IP engineering community to determine if there was
interest in the tool. In two days, we received more than 60 requests
-- people were begging for the tool," said April.
In addition to enabling ISPs to manage distribution of IP
addresses to their customers more efficiently now, FreeIPdb is
engineered to work with IPv6. "The smallest routable block (IP address
block that can be used independently by a customer) in IPv6 is 322
times larger than all of IPv4 address space. It is therefore crucial
that good tools exist to deal with the assignment and allocation of
that space. There would be no need to create a new tool or adapt
FreeIPdb when IPv6 is available," said April.
