It's no guarantee, but insider buys have offered clues in the past. As MarketWatch.com's Thom Calandra pointed out in a past column, Portal Software (PRSF: news, chart, profile) CEO John Little bought 800,000 of his company's shares in September for between 75 and 78 cents a share. Shares are now at $2.23.

London, UK, Jan 10, 2002 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) Portal Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: PRSF) and Napster Inc., the pioneering peertopeer music filesharing service, today announced that Napster has selected Infranet, Portal's customer management and billing software solution for management of Napster's new feebased membership service. Infranet provides Napster with the means to capture revenue from its membership and compensate content owners.

Portal's sophisticated transactional realtime rating capabilities provide Napster with the flexibility to develop innovative, targeted pricing offerings for its members and the ability to remit payments to rights holders, including recording artists, song writers, recording companies, and music publishers. Infranet enables Napster to manage membership accounts and efficiently bill for services.

"With Portal's Infranet software we will be able to rapidly deploy our new membership service, deliver consumer friendly pricing plans, and track filesharing activity to ensure accurate royalty payments," said Napster CEO Konrad Hilbers. "This technology is key to building our business and accurately compensating artists and other rights holders." "Napster's selection of Infranet is yet another demonstration of Portal's leadership in delivering new and innovative services as companies transition from free to paid services," said Steve Zielenski, Vice President of Communications Solutions for Portal Software. "We look forward to continuing to work with Napster as they transform the digital music file sharing service into a revenue generating business." About Napster Napster is the company that pioneered persontoperson file sharing and created one of the most frequently downloaded software applications in the history of the Internet. Napster provides music enthusiasts with an easytouse, high quality service for discovering new music and communicating their interests with other members of the Napster community.

The service enables users to locate and share music files, send instant messages to other users, and create Hot List bookmarks. In October 2000, Napster partnered with Bertelsmann AG to develop a membershipbased service. Edel Music and TVT Records joined the alliance in January 2001.

In June 2001, Napster became a MusicNet partner and signed a landmark distribution deal with the Association of Independent Music (AIM) and the Independent Music Companies Association (IMPALA), two organizations that represent hundreds of European independent record labels.
