FOREX: The euro starts the session fairly steady against the dollar and little new to go on.
"The dollar has held its own with improved equity sentiment ... but there's continued uncertainty in the marketplace about Iraq and whether that's a major looming negative for the currency," said Robert Sinche, chief currency strategist with Citibank in New York. "In that environment, not a lot of major position-taking is unfolding."
Ahead of the meeting over the weekend of finance ministers and central bankers from the G-7 nations in Washington, currency traders were paying particularly careful attention to policy-makers' remarks. Still, few analysts expect currencies to be a major talking point on the meeting's agenda.
Among European currencies, the Swiss franc traded choppily, as the Swiss National Bank's Bruno Gehrig, a member of the central bank's policy-making central directorate, said the SNB is prepared to cut interest rates if conditions warrant.
