TOKYO (Dow Jones)--The dollar eased slightly against the yen in Asia Thursday as profit-taking by short-term speculators outweighed buying by Japanese importers and other players, as well as the lift the greenback got from remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.
Throughout the session, selling led by speculators pulled the dollar back down whenever it rose close to the psychologically key Y122 level.

But the dollar got some support from Koizumi, who said in a speech that there is no panacea for the deflation plaguing Japan, indicating the government is unlikely to unveil drastic anti-deflation measures.

Koizumi's comments disappointed market participants who had been expecting him to announce aggressive steps to combat deflation. Given the Bank of Japan's unprecedented move Wednesday to consider directly purchasing shareholdings from Japanese banks, many players were hoping Koizumi would match the BOJ's unusual move with bold steps of his own.

Although Koizumi said the government will increase its cooperation with the BOJ to avert a financial system crisis, the lack of bite in his speech could mean the government's upcoming economic package may not contain meaningful measures, traders said.

"This doesn't augur well for the yen. We could see more yen-selling later in the global session, which could push the dollar back up into the Y122s," said a Japanese city bank dealer.

At 0545 GMT (1:45 a.m. EDT), the dollar was quoted at Y121.73, below Y121.95 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar was at Y122.42 late Wednesday in Tokyo.

The euro was at $0.9780, higher than $0.9770 late Wednesday in New York. The euro was at $0.9706 in Tokyo Wednesday.

Against the yen, the euro was quoted at Y119.04, down from Y119.15 in New York late Wednesday. The euro was at Y118.80 in Tokyo late Wednesday.
