Caustic Soda Contracts For Alumina Likely To Hit Record High
First-half 2005 caustic soda contracts for the alumina segment are likely to set a new record, analysts and market players say. U.S. producers have nominated the contracts at $350/m.t. fob, sources say, more than triple the first-half settlement of $114/m.t. fob. The previous high settlement was $295/m.t. fob in second-half 1991, says CMAI (Houston). The settlement is likely to be "not too far" from the nominations, one observer says, given tight supply, strong demand, and current spot prices. The nomination is "reflective of market conditions," says Mary Blackburn, director/chlor-alkali and vinyls studies at CMAI. Alumina producers have reportedly settled first-half 2005 caustic soda contracts with Asian suppliers at $275/m.t. fob, slightly below sellers' nominations of $280-$290/m.t. fob, sources say. Caustic soda spot prices have risen from lows of $50-$60/ton fob in early April, to $325-$350/ton fob U.S. Gulf in the domestic market and $340-$350/m.t. fob U.S. Gulf for exports. Domestic contract prices are $280-$300/ton fob in November, and producers are seeking increases of $50-$70/ton for December. Strong demand has shown no signs of letting up, and supply constraints are unlikely to ease in the near term because plants are already running flat out to meet demand, market players say. Operating rates have been hovering above 96% since January, and were at 97% in October, says the Chlorine Institute (Washington). An unplanned outage at Formosa Plastic's 880,000-ton/year chlor-alkali plant at Point Comfort, TX caused by a power outage at the complex on November 16 worsened an already tight market.
